Seven players per team on court, a 10-foot hoop, three seconds to pass, no dribbling, no contact, no backboard, and no running with the ball. Netball is an exciting, inclusive sport that can be played by all genders of all ages.
If you don’t know the sport, Netball has similar principles to basketball, korfball or ultimate frisbee. The aim of the game is to shoot as many goals through the hoop as possible with a ball that is a similar size to a soccer ball but has the grip of a volleyball.
It’s a true team sport as the ball must be passed from one player to another to move the ball down the court, while players are restricted to zones on the court, thereby building self-esteem and confidence as players own their ‘position’. As for movement, it’s great for spatial awareness, driving to an open space and hand/eye coordination.
Not many people know Netball was actually invented in America in 1895 as the original women’s basketball, from there it spread throughout the Commonwealth countries. Netball fans celebrated when in 1995 Netball became a recognized Olympic sport and a strong push remains underway for its inclusion in the Olympic Games Program.
